I approach lessons with a focus on theory, technique and ear training.

I am trained in modern jazz theory and I have experience with some alternative theories, such as the Kodaly method, which can be very effective for some students. I teach my student to both read and write music fluently using modern jazz notation.

Technical aspects of my lessons include learning about and honing match grip, the ‘four strokes’, ‘drop/catch’ technique, Molar technique and the 42 standard rudiments.

I believe ear training to be absolutely crucial in a musician’s development. My teachers taught me “if you can hear, you can play it”. I teach my students methods, such as rhythmic counting or singing, to recognise and articulate musical phrases even when they aren’t on their instrument.

Lastly, I teach everything with a purpose in mind, whether it’s performing, composing or something more specialised. One of my favourite parts of music education is witnessing a student’s hard work materialise into a performance. I use my recording and sound equipment and (somewhat limited) skills as a guitarist, to create a performance environment for the student to not only test out their newfound skills, but also to have a recording to reflect on and foster their development (and show off).
