Henry Hicks

Hi, I’m Henry Hicks — a Melbourne-based music teacher, professional musician, multi-instrumentalist and producer with over 20 years of experience in music.

I teach bass, guitar, piano and drums to students of all ages, backgrounds and experience levels, from complete beginners picking up an instrument for the first time through to advanced musicians developing their own artistic voice.

I currently teach primary and secondary school music, alongside private instrumental tuition and artist development. This experience has given me a flexible teaching approach — I understand that every student learns differently, and I tailor lessons around the individual’s age, ability, interests and goals.

I studied music at the Victorian College of the Arts (VCA) and have been teaching since 2014. Alongside education, I’ve built an extensive career as a professional musician, performing, recording and touring internationally as Horatio Luna and as a founding member of Melbourne soul/jazz collective 30/70.

My lessons can cover instrumental technique, rhythm and groove, reading, ear training, music theory, improvisation, songwriting, composition and learning songs that the student genuinely enjoys. I have a particular background in funk, soul, jazz, R&B, house and contemporary music, while my teaching is always shaped around the musical interests of the student.

For students interested in taking music further, I also offer artist development, drawing on my professional experience in songwriting, composition, recording, production, live performance, touring and developing an individual sound.

Most importantly, I aim to create an encouraging, relaxed and inclusive environment where students feel comfortable learning at their own pace. Whether the goal is to learn a first song, join a school band, develop confidence, prepare for performances or pursue music professionally, I help students build the practical skills and musical understanding to get there.
