Pandeiro Lessons

Hi! My name is Rana - I've been involved in the Samba drumming scene in Australia since 2001 and am an exponent of the Pandeiro - a kind of frame / tambourine style drum that is Brazil's national instrument. I play Pandeiro and a kick surdo (bass drum) in an improvised Jazz ensemble called Sahul Sakti, in a dub band and sometimes during samba performances! My teacher in Brazil comes from the Marcus Suzano lineage so I'm into the contemporary Pandeiro style which involves the non-dominant hand oscillating and opens up the instrument to playing any style of music/rhythm you can think of - it's a super democratic instrument - you can show up with a handbag and jam along to any music. I'm also very interested in Greg Sheehan's 'Rhythm Diamonds' modality if you you are interested in pursuing polyrhythms and syncopation with this instrument. It's quite a technical instrument and needs a bit of time and focus to get past the fundamentals but well worth it. I'm based in Fawkner on the Coburg North boundary
