I run my teaching studio alongside a busy freelance performing life and teaching at St Scholastica College. I greatly enjoy working with students keen to discover and nurture their individual voices and musical ideas, across a range of vocal styles.
I trained in classical technique at the Sydney Conservatorium Opera School (this still underpins all my professional singing) and have studied singing and languages in New York and Rome. In 2011 I started as principal soprano with the Song Company, a 6-singer professional vocal ensemble, and very quickly needed to learn how to healthily sing in a large range of styles, including pop, jazz, Renaissance polyphony, contemporary Australian music - even quarter-tone singing! I found the transition between genres fascinating, and the interplay between vocal choices and stylistic considerations.
I am passionate about teaching students how to build trust in their own voice and artistry, building their strength slowly, holistically and deeply and opening up possibilities for them. I continue to learn myself about the latest developments in singing and teaching research, for example I use the principles of evidence-based motor learning to facilitate long-term learning so that students learn to sing with confidence and flexibility outside the studio.
I have sung in over 15 languages and have a special interest sung language and musical and dramatic communication.
