I recently had the pleasure of working with Yi-Shing, an incredibly talented and accomplished pianist, for my AMus Exam. Her musical talent, enthusiastic attitude, and helpful advice made the whole experience truly exceptional… Her attention to detail and ability to communicate the nuances of the piece enhanced my interpretation, [and her] passionate commitment to seeking a holistic performance, rather than merely focusing on the exam requirements, was truly inspiring.
…What makes her unique is her ability to make the other player play better. As a pianist she possesses this already rare combination of technical mastery and musical sensitivity. But what is so special is her capability to use those skills to make music together, to listen to and blend with me when we play together. Whether it’s a Mozart or Brahms or Franck violin and piano sonata where both players are equal, or violin virtuoso pieces like Wieniawski’s Polonaise where the piano part is more in the background, it always seems easy to obtain the proper balance with her and create a true piece of art… That is a unique talent and very difficult to find in most pianists…
In the past few months, Yi-Shing has accompanied my daughter in various competitions and events.
She possesses incredible technical skills, automatically melts into music and helps provide a much better musical understanding of the pieces being played. She is dedicated not only to her part, but also the collaboration between instruments, thus making performances whole and unified.
Yi-Shing has the miraculous ability to increase the quality of the performances she accompanies. My daughter has felt that the comforting presence and stable, down to earth yet also expressive playing of Yi-Shing had boosted her performance, which also led to a successful live radio performance and the winning of competition prizes, achieved through her immaculate accompanying and musicianship.
It was a great honour to perform and rehearse with Yi-Shing, and we greatly look forward to collaborating with her again in the future.
